What happens to leather when wet? Why is it bad?

Well, I thought about buying a leather thong whip those who are thin strips of leather. and wrapping around the end of my wrist strap and make some sorta cool with it, but thats not the point. The issue is so wet love as a break and get all hard and enjoy it to the mold over and my skin? as i dont want to waste money on something that might not work or you can my skin looks weird. thanks!

Leather can be reduced and crack when wet. Why? "It can become cracked, brittle, and I think narrowing and the ruins of their form.
